Jojo's Buttermilk Biscuits, a review...

By this point, everyone has heard of Fixer Upper and who isn't a fan of Joanna & Chip Gaines?! They are the most likeable couple on tv and their family life is coveted by many. I have been a follower since their very first season, I remember watching the first episode when it aired and it pulled me in! I just love the connection they have with their clients and the cozy way Joanna designs each home personalized to the client like no other. Now while our home design preferences are drastically different (she loves Shiplap and farmhouse decor and I designed our house to be Ultra contemporary/modern) we both share in the same value of family life and food. I love to cook for my family like she does, and believe a strong family connection includes a closeness in the kitchen and around the table. I read Chip and Joanna's other book, "The Magnolia Story" and really recommend it.

Another gift for my birthday was Joanna's new cookbook, the Magnolia Table.  I was so excited when I opened it I couldn't wait for the sun to rise the next morning to break out her book and whip up a batch of her buttermilk biscuits. I wanted to see how they compared to my own. I thought it was appropo of her putting her biscuits as her first recipe, as she did explain that they are the favorite of the family. She reminds me a lot of myself. My family LOVES my buttermilk biscuits, and my kids request them for breakfast quite often. I'm always baking them as does she. These biscuits did not disappoint. I found that her recipe was quite similar to mine (after all they are biscuits and you use the basics) but she did incorporate egg into her recipe, which I've never done.  It does give a more yellow hue to the biscuit and does hold the biscuit together a bit more, like a binder. She does use an extra stick of butter than I do for mine. They still did end up tender, flaky, and buttery as you could ever imagine, and full of delicious flavor.

I only use Finlandia butter when it comes to Salted butter. Oh does it make ALL the difference. You have to get some if you've never used it. You will thank me, I promise. And when it comes to making southern buttermilk biscuits you have to use White Lily Flour Unbleached Self Rising flour. The best fluffy biscuit is made with this flour, and I've experimented with most of them!

Although her recipe states it makes about 20 biscuits, mine made about 15. I think mine were a little larger perhaps taller, but that's the size I like and either way, 15 was plenty! They came together quickly as usual, and I paired it with Sarabeth's Raspberry Key Lime Jam. We love all jams and jellies from Sarabeth's. My husband and I had breakfast at the Sarabeth's in Manhattan and of course we ordered biscuits and jelly! From then on, I've always kept it on hand. There is every flavor imaginable and can even be ordered online! Yay!

So if you're in the mood for a super buttery and flaky buttermilk biscuit, grab a copy of the Magnolia Table Cookbook and make some for yourself!
